“Think of menopause transition, or perimenopause, as a butterfly experience, ” says Jill Waggoner, MD, and independently practicing physician wiith Methodist Charlton Medical Group. “It’s a period of time for change— a new phase in life. Woman who have this attitude fare better during the menopause transition because they are happier.”
Almost all of the woman going through menopause transition experience at least some of it’s symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain, dificulty sleeping, vaginal dryness, and memory lapses or difficulty concentrating.
“A woman has completed menopause when menstral periods have seased for one continuous year,” Dr. Waggoner says. “Up until that time, she may become pregnant.”
The average age for women to experience menopause is 50 to 55, but menopause can occur when a women is in her early 40′s or as late as her 60s.
“It is not a disease, so there’s no treatment ,” Dr. Waggoner says. “the goal is to relieve symptoms, which may last up to five years.”
Dr. Waggoner suggest eating healthy fats, like omega-3 fatty acids, and exercising on a regular basis.
“Do weight bearing exercises to improve bone density,” she adds that exercise decreases the risk of heart attack and stroke and helps relieve stress.
